Third Quarterly meeting APRI, October 3, 2020

Asosiasi Pengelolaan Rajungan Indonesia (APRI) holds its third quarterly meeting (APRI Quarterly Meeting) in October 3, 2020. This meeting is held routinely every three months for coordination, information sharing and evaluation for and from APRI members, the Board APRI and APRI partners. The meeting was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting which was attended by 18 APRI members who were fisheries processing actors. The meeting this time focused on the discussion of Blue Swimming Crab (Rajungan) management towards global Ecolabel certification

This Third Quarterly (Q3) has two main event, Webinar and APRI Internal Meeting. This Webinar is involved a great speaker namely Ed Rhodes (NFI Crab Council), Prof. Dr. Ir. Rokhmin Dahuri, MS (KKP), Prof. Ir. R. Sjarief Widjaja Ph.D (BRSDM KP), and Dr. Ir. Sri Yanti JS, MPM (Bappenas). And second session Internal Meeting we have Hirmen Syofyanto (Marine Stewardship Council), Roderic Hodges (Marine Change), and Dr. Putu Liza Mustika (CETASI).

Ir. Kuncoro C. Nugroho as APRI Board tell about APRI Milestone and target in 2021, APRI wants to get Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for small crabs explicitly stated that APRI needed support from the government for comprehensive marine research in responding to the demands of the global market, as well as support for the acceleration of FIP towards MSC certification so that Indonesian crabs could not compete with other countries. Furthermore Mr. Ed Rhodes from the NFI Crab Council expressed his full support for APRI in implementing FIP for the improvement of small crab fisheries.

Prof. Rokhmin Dahuri as the first speaker in Q3 webinar session tell The sustainability of raw materials requires awareness of the importance of responsible fisheries and support for small crab cultivation technology. The challenge from a market perspective is increasing, The requirements for crab export, such as food safety quality standards, traceability, and ecolabeling certificates. According to Prof. Rokhmin, the way out of this problem is “Build the spirit of Indonesia Blue Swimming Crab Incorporated” by all stakeholders.  Prof. Sjarief dari BRSDM KP also tell about good idea to development of small crabs in Indonesia based on coastal communities, such as the agricultural concept of “transplanting”, where in potential areas (mangroves), restocking is carried out by spreading superior broodstock laying crabs and last speaker Dr. Sri Yanti explained the efforts of Bapennas in supporting the management of crab as a leading Indonesian fishery commodity through the FIP program. Bapenas is collaborating closely with APRI in fighting for the small crabs to get MSC certification by 2021 Dr. Hawis also said “APRI FIP has received a progress rating A, but APRI continues to strive to increase its value, starting point at 0.04 to 0.77 in 2020, is close to reaching MSC”.

Hirmen Syofyanto from MSC explained about MSC Fisheries and CoC certifications that can be developed by APRI and its members, and gave an overview of the costs that must be spent for the assessment. Continuing Hirmen’s explanation, Roderic Hodges from Marine Change presented the idea of ​​developing a financial model for APRI in carrying out the full MSC assessment. Next Dr. Putu explained APRI and CETASI’s research plan in addressing the issue of the impact of small crab fisheries on marine mammals. This meeting very interesting and the topic that needs to be studied more, so the APRI members want to discuss every 2 weeks in bi-weekly for more discuss.
