Mangrove Planting Action with Fishermen in Pamekasan: Efforts to Restore Coastal Ecosystems

Pamekasan, Monday, October 28, 2024 – In an effort to conserve coastal environments and strengthen shoreline resilience against erosion, the Indonesian Blue Swimming Crab Association (APRI), the Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Pamekasan, local fishermen, and the Pamekasan Mangrove Enthusiasts community joined forces to plant 1,000 mangrove seedlings along the coast of Branta Village, Pamekasan, East Java. This collaborative action reflects concern for marine ecosystems increasingly threatened by climate change, erosion, and coastal environmental exploitation.

This event was attended not only by fishermen who rely on the sea for their livelihoods but also by community leaders, local youth, and environmental advocates. Together, they planted mangrove seedlings along the coastline vulnerable to erosion. Mangroves are known as one of the most effective natural solutions for reducing erosion impacts and strengthening marine ecosystems by providing habitats for various marine species, including fish and crabs, which are a primary livelihood source for local fishermen.

“Mangroves are not just trees but a natural fortress that protects coastlines from damage and preserves biodiversity. By planting mangroves, we help future generations to continue enjoying a sustainable coastline,” APRI also fully supported this initiative, aligning with its commitment to sustainable business practices. APRI’s involvement in this action demonstrates the synergy between the business sector and the local community in protecting the environment and aiding coastal ecosystem recovery.

In addition to planting, the event included an educational session for fishermen and the local community on the importance of mangrove conservation and its maintenance. Participants gained in-depth understanding of how mangroves help absorb carbon, provide habitats for marine species, and maintain soil stability in coastal areas.

The mangrove planting action in Branta Village is hoped to be the first step toward more similar activities in other coastal areas of East Java. Through collaboration between the government, communities, and the private sector, environmental conservation can be sustainably achieved, bringing long-term benefits to coastal communities.
