The Indonesian government has introduced new regulations governing in 2015 the banning mini-trawl gear. Therefore, many fishermen now are in transition to change their fishing gear.
SFP is supporting APRI to carry out gear exchange program from gillnets to collapsible traps (rectangular and dome shaped traps with window escape) using the two boats in Lampung (about 800 traps per boat) with technical support from Fishing Technology in Semarang to train the fishers and monitor the impacts. It is planned to start deploying the gears in November 2016 when the blue swimming crab season starts. It is expected that the results from this trial could contribute to the government program to distribute more selective gears for the small-scale fishers.
