For Export Regulations, APRI Presents Data on Bycatch and Mammal Interaction on Blue Swimming Crab Fisheries at the MMPA Working Team Meeting

In order to comply with regulations for exporting fishery products to the United States (US), especially the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) – List Foreign Fisheries. APRI has presented the Bycatch and Mammal Interaction Data on the blue swimming crab Fishery at the MMPA (Marine Mammal Protection Act) work team meeting.
Dr. Hawis Madduppa as the Executive Director of APRI revealed that APRI has conducted data collection not only related to marine mammals but also all species related to the crab fishery. The latest collaboration between APRI and CETASI regarding mammalian interactions with crab fisheries in Madura has also concluded that there is no interaction of marine mammals on crab fisheries. This was appreciated in the MMPA working team meeting with small-scale fisheries which also pays attention to the condition of marine mammals.
On this occasion, APRI’s program activities related to ETP species were also explained about handling, mitigation has been attempted by APRI by socializing and installing banners to provide education and awareness to fishermen regarding ETP species and marine mammals. The hope of this activity is for traps and gillnets to be able to submit comparability finding related to MMPA.
