MMPA KKP Team with APRI visit Gebang Mekar and Bondet – Cirebon for Data Verification Related to MMPA

Field visits were carried out on 20-21 April 2021 in Gebang Mekar village and Bondet village, Cirebon Regency in order to comply with the export regulations for fishery products to the United States (US), especially the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) – List of Foreign Fisheries. This visit was aimed at confirming the collected data and adding field information such as Bycatch, the practice of small scale fisheries, and other documentation related to the characteristics of blue swimming crab fisheries with traps and gillnet fishing gear for submitting comparability finding related to MMPA.

The MMPA regulations aim to reduce marine mammal bycatch associated with commercial fishing, establish procedures for states to obtain authorization to import fish and fish products into the United States and evaluate programs to reduce marine mammal bycatch.

KKP MMPA Team with APRI Day one participated in the field in the activity of catching blue swimming crab with one of the community leaders of Gebang Mekar. Discussions were also held to obtain detailed information and Bpk. H. Hermanto explained one type of fishing gear used to catch blue swimming crab. Other activities include visiting boat owners with fishing gear H. Kursan (Miniplant and bubu boat owner) and H. Sukma (bubu boat owner) and simulated how to operate the traps in Mr. H. Kursan’s warehouse. Dr. Dedi Supriyadi from FKIP Unpad also shared the results of his research which has been published internationally on traps, gill nets, including by catch and biological analysis.

On the next day, the team continued their observations to Bondet, conducted interviews with several blue swimming crabs fisherman in Mertasinga and Grogol villages, conducted simulations on how to catch blue swimming crab with gill nets at Mr. Wakuni’s crab weighing point and visited MP. Mr Dicky.
