Coastal Cleanup! Together with BSC Fishermens, We Clean our Coastal, Pemalang, October 30, 2019

Many of us are still less concerned about the environment, especially the coastal environment. Many of us don’t realize that wastes can endanger life on the coast and the ocean. The presence of wastes that is difficult to degrade on the coast and the ocean very disturbing to the life of the biota in the area. As an oganization that concern in sustainability, APRI also pay attention to the coastal and marine environment.

As a concrete step towards environmental awareness, on the October 30, 2019, coastal cleanup was carried out in the coast of Dusun Pejarakan, Danasari Village, Pemalang, Central Java. This activity involving 152 fishermens, conceived by APRI, the Agency of Fisheries of Pemalang, PT Blue Star Anugrah which is the member of APRI, and the Agency of Living Environment. Coastal cleanup attended by Head of Danasari Village Mr. Maknun and the representatives of the importers from United States, that is the Country Manager of Blue Star Foods Corp. Mr. Edwing Fuentes and Bambang Arif Nugraha. APRI itself representated by Dr. Hawis Madduppa as Executive Director.

The coastal cleanup that has been done, which was done by local blue swimming crab fishermens managed to clean up approximately 3 tons of garbage. In this opportunity, APRI through the Executive Director who is also the fisheries and marine expert of IPB University, provides understanding to the fishermens so as not to catch the blue swimming crab that forbidden by the government, that is the blue swimming crab which is <10 cm and egg berried female blue swimming crab in accordance with the Regulation of Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries No. 56/PERMEN-KP/2016 about the  Prohibition of Catching and/or Export of Lobster (Panulirus spp.), Crab (Scylla spp.), and Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus spp.) from the Area of Republic of Indonesia. “If the blue swimming crab that are caught are less than 10 cm, let alone those that are laying eggs, release them again into the sea. That is how to preserve the environment for the sustainability of the fishermen’s own income,” he said.
