MSC Assessors Site Visit, Madura, October 18-20, 2019

Asosiasi Pengelolaan Rajungan Indonesia (APRI)/Indonesian Blue Swimming Crab Association as an organization which is focusing on the sustainability of blue swimming crab fisheries always developing the programs  to realize it. In this time, APRI try to get the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for the sustainability of the blue swimming crab resources and industry. MSC certification itself is an ecolabel which is showing that a seafood product was fulfill various criterias for sustainability. In order to realize the MSC certification for blue swimming crab fisheries, APRI will do the MSC pre-assessment in Madura. Blue swimming crab fisheries being one of the fisheries that pre-assessed through the Fish for Good. As the follow up of the pre-assessement, the MSC assessors  visit Madura as the MSC unit of assessment for blue swimming crab fisheries.

MSC assessors site visit conducted on 18-20 October 2019 with take place in Madura Island, especially in Bangkalan and Pamekasan District. The agenda including visit the mini plant in Bangkalan, meet and discuss with the local government, head of Pagagan Village, and local fishermens, visit the fishermen boats and see the Vessel Tracking System (VTS), visit the landing station, see the blue swimming crab egg berried female temporary shelter (crab box/crab apartment), visit the mini plant in Pamekasan, and discuss and closing meeting with Board of APRI. In the first day, MSC assessors accompanied by APRI team visit the mini plant in Bangkalan, Madura. MSC assessors and APRI team start the visit by discussion with the mini plant management, continued by seeing the blue swimming crab processing in the mini plant, and see the control document implementation.

The second day started by the meeting with local fishermens, head of Pagagan Village, and the local government such as the Agency of Fisheries of Pamekasan District. The meeting also participated by the APRI’s community organizer, enumerators, and some representatives from the industry. After the discussion, MSC assessors, APRI team, and the participants visit the blue swimming crab fishermen boat, see the Vessel Tracking System (VTS) and how it works.

The next activity is visit the landing site and see the blue swimming crab egg berried female temporary shelter (crab box/crab apartment) that managed by local fishermens. In this activity, explained the mechanism of blue swimming crab egg berried female temporary shelter. After seeing the blue swimming crab egg berried female temporary shelter, MSC assessors, APRI team, and the participants visit the mini plant in Pamekasan to see the blue swimming crab processing and had a lunch hosted by the mini plant owner.

After finish the lunch, MSC assessors and APRI team go to Surabaya to meet the Board of APRI. And the last day of MSC site visit, used by the MSC assessors and APRI team to discuss about the documents that support to MSC pre-assessment. The discussion conducted in Surabaya, and it continued by the closing meeting and dinner with Board of APRI. This activity is the closing activity in MSC site visit in Madura.

With the MSC site visit in order to MSC pre-assessment, APRI hopes that the MSC pre-assessment for blue swimming crab fisheries can get good results. APRI also thank the all of partners and stakeholders that support APRI, including in the MSC pre-assessment process. Hopefully that blue swimming crab fisheries can be MSC certified, as the commitment to realize the sustainability of blue swimming crab fisheries.
