Field Visit of Indonesian Blue Swimming Crab Fisheries Improvement Program, April 6-14, 2019

Blue swimming crab Fisheries Improvement Program (FIP) was developed by APRI since several years ago. APRI always trying to make better blue swimming crab fisheries one of them through the Fisheries Improvement Program. Blue swimming crab fisheries improvement program continously developed by APRI to maintain and improve the blue swimming crab fisheries in order to reach sustainability. Various activities and programs about the fisheries improvement program on blue swimming crab was conducted and organized by APRI both of APRI self or with the partners.

On April 6-14, 2019, there was an activity to visit several partners and supply chain in blue swimming crab fisheries in several areas such as in Central Java and East Java Province. The field visit of Indonesian blue swimming crab fisheries improvement program participated by various parties such as Mr. Stuart Green from Walton and Packard Foundation, Dr. Jeremy Prince as a fisheries expert from Australia that develop the Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR), APRI, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), and Diponegoro University.

The activities in this field visit including the general lecture on Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) in IPB University,  workshop of blue swimming crab harvest strategy that organized by Blue Swimming Crab Harvest Strategy Team, field visit in Betahwalang Demak that include the visit to the Angkruk (blue swimming crab landing site), view the data collection, visit post data and view the vessel tracking system, data display, blue swimming crab protecting area, trap maker, and discuss with local fishermens and collectors. And then, conduct audience with Agency of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Central Java Province and conduct the general lecture in Diponergoro University.

The field visit, also done in East Java Province. In East Java Province, the particpants visited the processing plant in Gresik that was CV Kuda Tama Mas, and conduct the audience with BKIPM Surabaya 1. And after it, the participants visited the fishermen village and landing site in Sumenep, and visited the miniplants such as MP Jumiang and MP Azis Pamekasan. With this field visit, hoped that blue swimming crab fisheries can be improved in all aspects, so that every blue swimming crab supply chain can prosper without putting aside the sustainability of blue swimming crab.
